| Birth: | Oct. 31, 1826 | | Death: | Mar. 18, 1905 |  Civil War Union Brevet Major General, Connecticut Governor, US Congressman, US Senator. He admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced law practice in Hartford, Connecticut. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st Connecticut Infantry and was commissioned Captain. He served with distinction throughout the war and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in September 1865. After the war, he was elected Governor of Connecticut, serving 1866 to 1867. In 1872, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Julius L. Strong, reelected to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. He was elected as a Republican to the US Senate in 1881 and served until 1905.
