Glenn Marcoe
RAPID CITY - Glenn Marcoe, 94, Rapid City, died August 5, 2009, at Fountain Springs Health Care. He was born Sept. 27, 1914, in Red Canyon near Edgemont to Walter and Lydia Marcoe.
The family moved to Omaha, Neb., where he attended South High School. He married Ruth Louise Anderson in Wahoo, Neb., on Aug. 1, 1932. He enrolled in Union College at Lincoln, Neb., and graduated from University of Nebraska.
He was drafted into the army in 1945. Upon discharge the family relocated to Rapid City. He started a construction company with his brother, Robert developing several subdivisions in Rapid City and built many homes in the South Canyon Area.
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church where he was often asked to preach and teach. In retirement Glenn and Ruth lived at the Black Hills Health and Education Center near Hermosa where they donated their time and work. They helped build residence halls, water systems, and numerous remodeling projects.
His wife Ruth worked by his side doing all kinds of construction work, and cooked for many workers and family. She died in 1996.
His last house was built for Rosemary Truesdell whom later he married. They lived the past 13 years in Las Vegas and Rapid City.
Glenn was a colorful person who was always willing to help others in need and give them a home to live in. He was a great historian, religious leader and storyteller.
He is survived by his son, Pierre Marcoe, Rapid City; daughters, Kathleen Barton, Hemet, Calif., Pamela Zyback, Mollala, Ore., and Patricia Dries, Novato, Calif.; his grandchildren, Laurie Jewett, Hugh and Russel Barton, Joshua, Thaddius and Nathaniel Marcoe, Aaron and Alistar Zyback and Daniel Dries; and his 17 great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at the Seventhday Adventist Church, 4703 South Canyon Road. Please join the family for lunch and fellowship after the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will go to the Black Hills Health and Education Center and the Seventhday Adventist Elementary School.
Inurnment has taken place in the Hermosa Cemetery.
