U.S. Congressman, U.S. Army Brigadier General. At the age 24, he entered the U. S. Army as a Cavalry Cornet in 1792, was promoted a Lieutenant of U.S. Dragoons in 1793, served in the Battle of Fallen Timbersand in the Indian Wars and was subsequently promoted to a Captain. He resigned from the Army 1795, returned to Maryland and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates for many years, when elected as a Republican to the Ninth Congress, serving (1805-07). In 1809, he rejoined the Army as a Colonel in command at Fort Adams on the Mississippi in 1810. During the War of 1812, he took possession of Baton Rouge and a portion of West Florida. Ordered to the northern frontier, he was appointed Brigadier General on August 1, 1813, was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chryslers Field New York and died from his wounds at age 45.
