Born in Liberty, Kentucky, he was a right handed pitcher whom played for fifteen seasons with the Boston Red Sox 1915 to 1919, New York Yankees 1920 to 1923, Cincinnati Reds 1924 to 1928 and New York Giants in 1929. On August 16, 1920, in a game at New York, he threw a pitch that accidentally struck Cleveland Indians' shortstop Ray Chapman in the head causing the only fatality in Major League Baseball history. He finished his career with a 207-126 record, 29 shutouts, 862 strikeouts and a 2.92 earned run average.
