His best known role was that of the obnoxious interior designer Otho in Tim Burton's horror-comedy "Beetlejuice" (1988). Shadix became close friends with Burton and the pair worked together in two more films, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (voice only, as The Mayor, 1993), and the remake of "Planet of The Apes" (2001). He is also remembered as Father Ripper in the 1989 cult classic "Heathers". After living in Los Angeles for many years, Shadix returned to his native Bessemer in 2007. The actor lost his house and belongings in a 2008 fire and suffered from poor health in his last years.
