IA--Keokuk Daily Gate...09 Aug 1915
Keokuk, died Sunday [8-8] at GrahamHosp as a result of terrible burns received Friday at her home. MrsBetts' burns were received when her clothing caught fire from flames from a gasoline stove which had been turned on in some manner before she applied the torch & which burst into flames in an instant. Following this distressing accident, MrsBetts was taken to GrahamHosp where her burns received the attention of physicians. Saturday morning it was stated that she had a chance to live, but toward evening her con-dition became serious & after a vain struggle she passed away early Sunday. The burns received in the fire covered her arms, limbs & breast. If she had lived it would undoubtedly have been necessary to graft a large amount of skin on the burned area. The fatal termi-nation of this regrettable accident has been received with sorrow by MrsBetts' friends & acquaintances who were shocked on Friday to hear of the accident that had befallen her. She was a widow & lived with her adopted son, Charles Betts. Her husband Mathias died here 4yrs ago, Jun 6. She was born 16 Aug 1845 at Carthage IL & lived in that city the early part of her life. Her maiden name was Mary Spangler. She married Mathias Betts at Maryvl MO in Apr 1873. Mr-Mrs Betts lived in that place for 6yrs, later moving to Carthage where another 6yrs were spent, finally coming to Keokuk. This city had been the decedent's home for a period of 22yrs & she was widely known here. For the last 20yrs she had been an invalid, unable to walk without the aid of crutches. A paralytic stroke was the cause of this.
Besides her adopted son, she is survived by the following bros & sis: MrsEC Betts-Keokuk; MrsJ Spicer-D'Moines; Wm & Phillip Spangler-both of Carthage.
Short services were held this afternoon from Ackley Undertaking Establishment, conducted by RevWm Baker-First Christian Church after which the body was taken to Carthage where the funeral will be held tomorrow [8-10] from the Christian Church there. MrsBetts attended the Christian Church here, although she was not a member of the congregation. {Burial in Moss Ridge Cem}
