| Birth: | Dec. 30, 1819 Mount Pleasant (Juniata County) Juniata County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Feb. 8, 1873, USA |  Civil War Union Major General, 16th Pennsylvania Governor. A man of many jobs from coast to coast: Military service as colonel in the Mexican War, postmaster of California, first mayor of San Fransico, Territorial Goveror of Kansas, Col. of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1861, Brigadier General in April l862, twice wounded at Cedar Mountain in August l862, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg with distinction, the sent west to Chattanooga and then on to the March to the Sea and in 1866 elected governor of Pennsylvania serving two terms. He died 18 days after leaving office in January l873. A large state stands on Culp's Hill in Gettysburg, and another atop his grave in Harrisburg Cemetery. (bio by: Ethan F.
