I had the honor of working with Rodney and I am deeply DEEPLY saddened by his passing. He was a truly a best friend <3 Rest in peace, Rodney...we've had our ups and downs and big time differences, but you have always rocked.

He had gone to a casino and then never showed up for work on the next scheduled day. The pathology report stated that there was an overdose of medication. My heart hurts in so many ways.

GRANDVILLE -- As an area police Honor Guard member, Grandville Officer Rodney Holmes embodied respect as he attended the funerals of his police brethren.

On Thursday, his friends on the force will do the same for him, standing sentry by his casket and accompanying it to the cemetery.

"Rodney was an Honor Guard member, and now they will be participating with his funeral," said Grandville Police's Deputy Chief Daniel Steere.

"We are all kind of shocked about this. The day of the funeral -- it's really going to hit home."

Holmes, 39, suffered a heart attack Friday while off-duty and out of town, family members said. He died at a hospital in Michigan City, Ind.

A 12-year veteran of Grandville's department, Holmes was a road patrol officer and a firearms range instructor. Before his law enforcement career, he was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, with stints in Korea and Honduras, relatives said.

His co-workers described him was an intense guy, very dedicated to his job.

"He had that military-law enforcement persona," Steere said. "He lived it and breathed it."

When the department wanted to send someone to train as part of the area's Honor Guard, Holmes was a natural choice, colleagues said. The guard offers a police presence at the funerals of fallen and former police officers. Others from the department followed suit and joined the guard.

Members of Holmes' family said they remember his softer side.

Being a father was his greatest joy, they said. He delighted in spending time with his 11-year-old daughter, Elise, who attends special education classes in the Grandville school district.

"He was a big advocate for her," Elise's mother, Jill Borden, of her ex-husband.

Holmes also was an avid golfer and a Michigan State University fan.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Lindsi, and many other relatives and friends.

His funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at Jamestown Reformed Church, 2554 Riley St.
