Lester D. Balts, 88, Barron, Wis., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, while surrounded by family.

He was born May 26, 1914, in the Town of Anson, Chippewa County, the son of John and Annie (Peterson) Balts. The family later moved to the Town of Arthur where he attended Mitchel Country School. He also attended Cadott High School.

He farmed in the Town of Arthur, drove gravel truck for the Chippewa County Highway Department, and worked part-time at Armor Meat Packaging Company, Eau Claire, before his marriage.

He married Esther Blum of Owen on March 15, 1947, at Owen Gospel Tabernacle. In 1954, they moved to Eau Claire, where he built homes and did general carpentry. He built many homes in the Eau Claire area before moving to Colfax in 1966.

At Colfax, he and his older sons were engaged in farming. The family moved to the rural Chetek area in 1969 where they farmed to, and even into, his retirement. After suffering several strokes in addition to other health problems, he moved into Barron Riverside Manor, where he resided the past three years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, David (Barbara Stokes) of Chetek, Douglas (Sharon Candler) of Dallas, John (Joanne Brandt) of Rice Lake, William (Shelly Maas) of Barron, and Kevin (Shannon Sullivan) of Chippewa Falls;
daughters, Sylvia (Edwin) Halverson, Cynthia (Donald) Nelson, both of Barron, Sharon (Donald) Stauffer of Glenwood City, and Jennifer Lyon of Cameron; 32 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Verna Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Erma (Rueben) Anderson of McGregor, Minn.; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Amos, Robert, Leonard, and Philip; a sister, Mildred Christianson; nephews; nieces; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, from Foursquare Gospel Church, Barron, with interment at Dallas Cemetery.

Rausch-Rockman Funeral Service, Barron, handled arrangements.
