Obituary, dated May 6, 1915:
YOUNG WIFE'S PLANS FRUSTRATED BY DEATH
Mrs. Merrill Cheney Suddenly Stricken on Eve of Her Intended Departure to Join Husband.
While in the midst of plans for joining her husband in Minneapolis, to which she eagerly looked forward, Mrs. Merrill Cheney was stricken with apoplexy at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicoli Hawkinson, in North Menomonie Wednesday night and died early Thursday morning.
Mrs. Cheney had been in poor health for a long time, having come from Minneapolis about a year ago for that reason. Her condition of late had been much improved, however, and she talked constantly of going to Minneapolis to be with Mr. Cheney. It had been agreed that she should join him when he obtained steady employment and for some time he has been working as janitor for the American Art company in that city. On Wednesday she packed her belongings intending to leave Saturday.
She suffered somewhat from a headache during the day, but otherwise felt well. She retired early and when a neighbor called at 8:30 she said she was feeling well. Her mother visited her in her room upstairs at 9 and shortly after other members of the family went to her and found nothing to alarm them. At 9:30, however, she was heard to fall out of bed. A physician was called and found her suffering with a stroke of apoplexy. She passed away between 12 and 1 o'clock, never regaining consciousness.
Inga Hawkinson was born in North Menomonie April 5, 1889, and was united in marriage with Merrill Cheney of Minneapolis, June 29, 1912. She spent the most of her life in Menomonie, though she lived in Minneapolis about three years and spent the last year in Jackson, Mich.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Hawkinson residence and the United Lutheran church in North Menomonie, being in charge of Rev. P.A. Dietrichson. Interment was in Halvorson cemetery.
