George Kretsinger emigrated from Germany. He bought land in Maryland and farmed. He married Dorothea "Dolley" Eckenbarger July 2, 1803. The had 12 children: Delia; George; Isaac; John; Lewis; Mary; Samuel; Elizabeth; Lydia; Mahala; Rachel; and Rebecca. Around 1810, they sold their land in Maryland and moved south to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Tragedy struck in the summer of 1829, when a fire broke out in their house. George and Dolley lost their lives in the fire while trying to save their belongings, leaving all 12 of their children orphans. The younger children were parceled among local families out until they were old enough to marry or move on.
