LAMAR, Mo. - Norman G. Foster, 78, Denton, Texas, formerly of Lamar, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Denton Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Foster was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Chicago, Ill.

He was an Army veteran of World War II who served in the Army Entertainment Corps on the North African front.

He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1941 and his master's degree and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Arkansas.

He joined the faculty of Texas Women's University in 1965, where he taught chemistry until he retired in 1985.

He was a career research chemist and a mass spectrometist. He was also co-author of a textbook, Interpretation of Mass Spectra of Organic Compounds, which was commonly used in many graduate mass spectrometry programs.

He was a Fellow of the AAAS, a Fellow of the AIC and a charter member of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.

He was a member of New York Academy of Sciences, Texas Academy of Sciences, American Chemical Society, American Association of University Professors, Coblentz Society, Planetary Society and Dallas Society of Analytical Chemists.

He was named "Analyst of the Year" in 1974 by the Dallas Society of Analytical Chemists.

He married Alice Belle Stover in February 1944 in Joplin. She died in 1983.

He married Ardis L. Sedlacek in January 1985. She died in September 1996.

Survivors include five daughters, Christine C. Lorenz, Liverpool, N.Y., Susan E. Lacy, Weatherford, Texas, Karen Cason, Del Valle, Texas, Claire A. Foster, Plano, Texas, and Francene F. Vahlenkamp, Denton, Texas; a sister, Faith Foster Stephan, Bethesda, Md.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schmitz-Floyd-Anderson Funeral Home, Denton.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lake Cemetery, Lamar.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.

Contributions may be made to the Dr. Norman G. Foster Chemistry Scholarship in care of Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.
