OBITUARY

MRS. KATE GLEASON
With heartfelt sorrow we chronicle the passing away of a former well known Chariton lady, Mrs. Kate Gleason, of Des Moines, which occurred on Friday afternoon, May 10, 1929, at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 3 days, after an illness extending over a period of about seven years. For about six months she had been confined to her bed, and death was not unexpected, coming as a welcome release from her sufferings, which at times had been intense.
The remains were brought to Chariton Friday night and taken to the Beardsley Funeral Home, where funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. Sayre, of St. Andrew's Episcopal church, after which she was laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, and bore testimony to the high regard in which she was held, as well as sympathy and love for the bereaved ones.
Kate Van Sickle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Van Sickle, was born in Chariton, Iowa, on August 7, 1861. She grew to young womanhood at this place and was married here on February 6, 1881, to Mr. Willard P. Gleason. Soon after their marriage they moved to La Junta, Colorado, where they lived several years and then moved to Illinois.
From there they went to Solomon City, Kansas, and while residing at that place Mr. Gleason suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered, dying at the home of his parents in Mankato, Minnesota about 1895.
Mr. and Mrs. Gleason were the parents of one daughter, now Mrs. Louise Dalin, of Des Moines, who, in her great sorrow, will have the deep sympathy of innumerable friends.
Mrs. Gleason came to Chariton after her husband died and resided here until twenty-one years ago this coming June, when she and her daughter and husband moved to Ottumwa. They lived there about eight months and then located in Des Moines and that place was her home until death claimed her.
Many years ago she united with the Episcopal church at this place. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors order, and of the Chariton Club of Des Moines.
She possessed a jovial disposition, and friends were always welcome at her home, and were royally entertained by her. She was a good woman, a devoted wife and mother, a splendid neighbor, and won friends of all with whom she came in contact and her demise has brought sadness to many hearts.
