| Birth: | Oct. 17, 1950 | | Death: | Dec. 8, 1996 |  Actor. Born Howard Ellsworth Rollins, Junior, nicknamed Ho Ro. Studied theater in Maryland at Towson State College. "Our Street" the nation‚s first black soap opera featured Howard as "Slick". 1964 Howard was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor on the daytime soap opera "Another World". In 1974 he left Baltimore for New York City to pursue his career in acting. 1981 he won an Oscar nomination for his role as Coalhouse Walker, Jr., in "Ragtime". Howard got his start in acting in "Of Mice and Men" and then "On The Block". Howard starred in other movies and nighttime television series: "A Soldier‚s Story", "New York Undercover" and "Remember Wenn". Howard is well known for his role as Virgil Tibbs, "In The Heat of the Night". Due to spending a month in jail in 1993 and continuous legal issues, he was dropped from In The Heat of the Night.
