Birth: Aug. 23, 1832
Indiana, USA
Death: unknown
Elvaston
Hancock County
Illinois, USA

Eliza Jane Moore married Alanson Wells in Hancock CO, IL on January 2, 1851. They had seven children living in the home in the 1870 census. The family was residing in Prairie Township, Hancock CO, IL and Alanson is listed as a farmer with Eliza listed as 'keeping house.' All seven children are listed as born in Illinois. Eliza's tombstone is recorded as listing her birth as 1836, but on the 1860 US census, her age is listed as 28. On the 1870 census, she is listed as 38. There seems to be confusion as to the years of her birth and death given on the tombstone. The following report may help explain the contradictions:

The Cozard cemetery is on private property in Bear Creek Township, Hancock CO, IL and is virtually inaccessible. The cemetery is located a few miles south of Elvaston, IL. A report of the Cozard cemetery was written by Warren L. Van Dine in 1965. This report was published in 'The Gate City' a Keokuk, IA newspaper in 1965. Mr. Van Dine did an inventory of the tombstones and recorded what was possible but states that 'the cemetery is grown to high grass and brush and several very large trees cut down many years back lie on the ground where they were fallen. There are some stones to be found but all are off their bases and flat on the ground. One has to search to find any but by raking away leaves, we managed to find a few and to read some of the inscriptions. .....others were badly worn and most of them broken in two. Several were the rough limestone of very early times here, with all inscriptions crumbled away.......the Cozard cemetery is completely abandoned today. It has been pastured by farm stock probably for seventy-five years at least, maybe for as long as a hundred. There are no fences around it and no signs of ever having any.' (document received at the Hancock CO Historical Society, Carthage, IL by the manager of this Find a Grave burial.)
