William Hayes Acklen was one of the six children of Joseph and Adelicia (Hayes) Acklen. Later in life, he adopted the older spelling of his surname – Ackland. William married Laura Crocker (1871-1931) on June 2, 1896 in Cleveland, Ohio but their marriage lasted only a short while. He had no children.
When he died in 1940, William was interred in the family mausoleum in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, TN. As the result of a bequest in his will that the bulk of his fortune go to a southern university to establish an art museum in his name, and his remains to be buried there, he was reinterred in 1958 in the Ackland Memorial Art Museum located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
One 1943 newspaper gave that William passed away in Nashville, TN but this has not been verified. More likely, he passed away in Volusia County, Florida but, again, not verified.
