Isaac Leonard Messer was the son of James A. Messer and Rachel (Barnes) Messer.

He married Martha Darthulia Lane in Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee, on October 20,1904.

After Darthulia's death he married Margaret Mariar Herron in Blount, Tennessee, on June 6, 1922.

The 1935 Knoxville directory listed his occupation as a weaver at Jefferson Woolen Mills.

Isaac and Mariar also had a son, Cecil, born in 1943.

His obituary March 2, 1968 in the Knoxville News Sentinel reads as follows: "Messer, Isaac - age 83, passed away at 10:40 p.m. Friday. Survivors: sons, Robert, Henry, G.H., Eugene Messer; daughters, Mrs. Bill Keller, Mrs. Eula Maples, Mrs. A.C. Sayne, Mrs. Milton Thomas, Mrs. Kermit Fox, Mrs. Brownlow Covington; 36 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Gayland Heights Baptist Church. Funeral 2 p.m. at Smith Mortuary. Interment Old Piney Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends at Smith Mortuary, Maryville, 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday."
