Born in Newport, Pennsylvania, he was a third baseman making his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 20, 1941. After serving in US Military during World War II, for eleven seasons he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1941, 1946-47), Brooklyn Dodgers (1948-54) and Baltimore Orioles in 1955. He ended his career with a record of 974 hits, 470 runs scored, 66 homeruns, 351 runs batted in and a .262 batting average. He died at age 58 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
