His childhood education was in the public schools of Scipio Township. He joined the Free Will Baptist denomination in 1860 and in 1863 served the Government as an armny teamster during the Civil War. Between March and September of 1865 he served in active duty with the 188th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
He entered Ohio University in 1868 and graduated in 1873. He was ordained in 1872. In 1874, he became President of Ridgeville College in Indiana and pastor of the Free Will Baptist church there. In 1876 He received his M.A.from Ohio University and in 1878 took over Wilkesville Academy in Ohio 15 miles from Rio Grande college where he joined the college staff a year later. In 1887 he became the third president of Rio Grand College at the age of 41.
He served Rio Grande College for 40 years and 24 of those as President. He resigned as president in 1911, but remained on the faculty until 1919, also returning to ministerial duties.
The University of Wooster conferred upon him the Ph.D. Degree. Ohio University conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He served as President of the Southeastern Ohio Teacher's Association. President of the Ohio Free Communion Baptist Association. Delegate to several Free Baptist General Conferences between 1883 and 1904. Delegate to the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in Americas. He played an active role in the merger between Free Baptist and the Northern Baptist in 1911.
