Hershel Randall Hanner, better known as Randy, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Mr. Hanner was born September 1, 1937 in Atlanta, TX to Hershel and Marie Hanner. He was a member of the 1955 graduating class of Atlanta High School, attended the University of Oklahoma, and Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science in Dallas, TX.
He was a third generation owner of Hanner Funeral Service and Cass County Life Insurance Company where both companies were charter members of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In addition to spending 51 years serving in the funeral industry, he had various other successful business interests in which he was involved.
He was an active member in the community and surrounding areas where he served 52 years as a Shriner, chaired the board of Mental Health Mental Retardation Clinic, member of the Lion's Club where he served as president several terms and received Lion of the Year. In prior years he was very active with the Boy Scouts. He always gave generously to many charities, and was especially giving to those that involved children.
Mr. Hanner served a term as chair of East Texas Funeral Directors Association, served on the board of directors for the Texas Funeral Directors Association where in June of 2008 he received a 50 year recognition award in honor of his service as a licensed funeral professional in Texas. Hanner Funeral Service has been a standing member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes for over 60 years. During which time Randy served in many areas for SIFH and was often instrumental in helping write and pass legislation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Atlanta, TX where he served as chair of the administrative board, chair of finance, chair of trustees, and chair of church council. Randy belonged to the Friendship Sunday School class since its origin in 1961 which he loved and faithfully attended.
Randy was a man of integrity. He was always fair and honest in business and in his personal life. He was a mentor to many, a friend to everyone, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Randy touched so many lives over the years through his patience, generosity, and understanding. He was bigger than life, outgoing and warm. Randy had a great sense of humor, loved the outdoors, and was a true gentleman. We celebrate the life of Hershel Randall Hanner and know he will continue to live among us.
Mr. Hanner was preceded in death by his parents Marie and Hershel Hanner, and sister Suzanne Hanner Hale.
Mr. Hanner is survived by his wife Donna Gail Hanner of Atlanta, TX, his son John Michael Hanner and wife Kerri of Atlanta, TX, daughter Julia Lee Braun and husband Tom of Euless, TX. One sister Jan Knowles and husband James of Tyler, TX.
Grandchildren: Emily and Ben Braun, Annemarie and Cole Hanner.
