| Birth: | May 22, 1970 | | Death: | Sep. 11, 2001 Shanksville Somerset County Pennsylvania, USA | United Flight 93 Passenger. He was a rugby player who helped his University of California at Berkeley team earn two national titles. A big man nicknamed "Bear Trap", he also helped recruit and train members of San Francisco's first gay rugby team. He was the founder of a public relations firm with offices in San Francisco and New York. On September 11, 2001, Bingham, who had recently moved to New York City, was flying back to the Bay area to visit family. The plane was hijacked by terrorists presumably intent on crashing it into a target in Washington, D.C. It is widely believed that Bingham was part of a group of passengers who attempted to thwart the hijackers. Before they acted, he called his mother from an airplane phone and told her that "things didn't look good" and that he loved them all. On September 22, 2001, Senator John McCain delivered a eulogy in honor of Bingham saying, in part, "It has been my fate to witness great courage and sacrifice for America's sake, but none greater than the selfless sacrifice of Mark Bingham and those good men who grasped the gravity of the moment, understood the threat, and decided to fight back at the cost of their lives."
