MELVIN "MIKE" BUTRICA
AGE: 90 MILLTOWN
Melvin "Mike" Butrica, of Milltown, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 90.
Born in Highland Park, he lived in Milltown most of his life.
An Army sergeant during World War II, he was a Pearl Harbor survivor, serving with the 24th Infantry.
Mike was a hardwood floor contractor with Local 2212, Edison. He was a communicant and longtime usher at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Milltown. He lead the rosary at Care One in East Brunswick, every Wednesday. Mike was a 50-year lifetime member and past president of the Milltown Lions Club. He served as Governor from 1986-87 for Lions Club District 16-D.
He was an active member, along with his granddaughters, Lisa and Samantha of the Middlesex County Association of the Blind in Old Bridge, where he served as Association President. He served on the Milltown Board of Adjustment, was a 40-year Democratic Committeeman, and a member of the Milltown Democratic Social Club. He served as Grand Marshall of the Milltown 4th of July Parade in 1988. He was a member of the East Brunswick and Milltown V.F.W.'s.
Mike took great pride in his woodworking talents, where he donated many items during the years to various charities and Our Lady of Lourdes events. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time fishing on his son Joe's boat, along with his grandchildren, and especially his First Mate Matthew. All that knew Mike knew he was a tireless worker who fought for what he believed in. He will be sadly missed.
He is predeceased by his grandson, Thomas Zdunek, (d. 2005); and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Roselyn (Calapa) Butrica; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Shelly Butrica; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Joel Carasso; and his daughter, Carol Zdunek , all of Milltown; his grandchildren, Michael and his wife Charissa and Matthew Butrica, Samantha and Joey Carasso, and Lisa Zdunek. Also surviving are his brothers, Lawrence, Walter, Irving and William; and his sisters, Eleanor, Vera, Helen and Anna.
Friends and relatives may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N. Main St. at Riva Ave., Milltown. A Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2 at Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church, North Brunswick. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Our Lady of Lourdes School or the M.C. Association of the Blind, c/o 34 Birch St., Old Bridge, NJ 08857.
