Elected as territorial delegate to Congress in 1809, 1811, 1812, and 1814. Elected to serve as President of Constitutional Convention for Indiana in summer of 1816. Elected as first Governor of the State of Indiana and took office November 7, 1816. Resigned governorship on September 12, 1822 to serve as representative to Congress from second congressional district. Re-elected as rep. in 1824, 1826, and 1828. Served on commissions in 1818 and 1832 to negotiate treaties with the Potawatomi, Wea, and Miami Indians.
