Betty was the 4th and youngest daughter of Atticus Brown and Nena Brinson , sister to Margaret, Frances, and Mary.Tragically Frances died in a accidental fire at the age of 8, her mother Nena also died from a long illness of Turberculosis just a few years later. Betty was only 12 years old at the time.During the Great Depression in 1929 times became so hard Betty and her sisters had to live in a tent and ate their meals from soup lines.
At a young age Betty enjoyed horseback ridding, writing poems, reading movie magazines, and drawing her favorite stars of the 1930's Shirley Temple, Jean Harlow etc..Betty was a naturally gifted artist, and would later attend art school as a young woman.Betty also worked at Rich's department store, and Crawford Long hospital in Atlanta as a nurse aide.
Betty was the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Army from Atlanta Georgia at FT McClellan Alabama, home of the WAAC(Womens Army Auxiliary Corps)in the "Bedpan Brigade". Betty served as a WAC Cpl. in Tec5 as a nurse medic and secretary. She met her handsome husband PFC John Curror Fleming while in the army stationed in Daytona Beach Florida, they were married November 26 1943. They had 3 sons,youngest son Stephen passed in 1977.
A devoted and loving wife, mother, sister,and grandmother. In her later years, she enjoyed teaching Art,The Bible, cooking and gardening to her granddaughters. Her grandchildren Melissa and Heidi knew her as (Big Mama) she is loved and missed dearly. Our Love is everlasting..
Betty passed away from emphysema peacefully at home in her sleep one night at age 61, she rest beside her husband and son at "Forest Hills" cemetery..

I was very young when my grandmother passed but I treasure every memory of our short time together. My sister Melissa had more memories and I was fascinated with all the stories she told me.I wish I had been able to ask my grandmother about her time in the women's army as a WACC. My father told me she got to meet actor Alan Ladd when she was working as a nurse in the WAC. He was visiting soldiers in the hospital and was very nice to her. It must have been very exciteing and hard to live in those days. I remember once her talking about her sister Dinky who died, she must have missed her dearly. I also love all the art work she drew and made for Melissa and me. I framed several of her drawings including one of Mickey Mouse that are so lovely. I know she and my grandfather loved us with all their heart and they will forever be in my heart. I wish that other's in the family were as generous, kind and sharing as they were to us. I'm so blessed to have such loving and careing grandparents.I look forward to the day when we are all together again.
