Mrs. Sarah E. Townsend passed away on Monday, Jan. 21, 1918, at the residence of her nieces, the Misses Mary and Sarah Patrick, Beacon, Dutchess County, with whom she had made her home for a number of years past. She had been in a feeble condition for quite awhile, owing to the weight of extreme years.

Mrs. Townsend was born in the town of Patterson, March 7, 1828, and was in her 90th year. She was one of the five children of Peter and Fannie (Baldwin) Dykeman, and the last surviving member of that family, which consisted of two sons and three daughters. Her brothers were James B. Dykeman, of Carmel, and Nathan C. Dykeman, of Dykemans's Station; her sisters, Susan, wife of J. Patrick, and Ruth, who died young. She was the second wife of John Townsend, eldest brother of Eli Townsend, of Kent, and much of their married life was passed at Pawling. He died a number of years ago. Mrs. Townsend leaves one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Baldwin, of Pasadena, California, and one son, George H. Townsend, of Brewster, he sides two step-children, Mrs. H.A. Burr and Charles H. Townsend, of Pawling. Besides her two nieces, the Misses Mary and Sarah Patrick, with whom she lived, she also leaves other nieces and nephews, among them, Mrs. Charles B. Travis and Mrs. Charles E. Nichols, of Carmel; Frank B. Dykeman, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Peter B. Dykeman. of Wyoming, and Willard J. Dykeman, of Asheville, North Carolina. N.B. Dykeman, of this village, and Henry J. Dykeman, of Kent, are grand-nephews of Mrs. Townsend.

She was a woman of noble character and winning personality, and in what ever community she resided always attracted to herself a wide circle of friends.

The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 23rd. Rev. Howard Kingdon officiated and the burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
