Obit: Barry Adage Newspaper, Sept 24, 1880, pg 3, col. 4, It is with feelings of sadness that we are called upon to announce the death of our venerable and esteemed citizen, Mrs. Roby Ross, which sad event occurred at her residence in this city last Saturday morning, at the age of ninety-one years. Mrs. Ross has for many years past been a resident of this city and enjoyed the respect and confidence of her neighbors and friends. Although she has had several spells of sickness during a few months past she was in her usual health until with a short time of her death. Her funeral was held at the M.E. Church at 9 am on Sunday, Rev. Wm. Hoyt officiating, after which the remains were conveyed to Pittsfield for interment, a large number of relatives and friends following them to their last resting place. The following is from her obituary notice in the Pittsfield Democrat: The deceased, whose maiden name was Gray, being a sister of Stephen R. Gray, Esq. of this place, was born in Berlin, Rens Co. NY; Sept 27, 1789, and was there married to Clarendon Ross. In the year 1819 Mrs. Ross with her husband and son, Schuyler Gray Ross, in company with her husband's brothers, Capt. Leonard, Col. William, John and Dr. Henry J. and their families together with others emigrated to this State, reaching Alton late in the fall. Here leaving their families provided with quarters, the men pushed on up to Atlas in this county, and proceeded to erect log cabins for their homes, of which with their families they took possession in February, 1820. Clarendon Ross died Aug. 7, 1820, and his widow subsequently married his brother, Capt. Leonard Ross, who died many years since, and she remaining his widow until her death. Thus has passed away one of the very earliest of the pioneers of this county, and one too, who in all the relations of life which she was called to act. was ever good and true.
