CHAPEL HILL, N.C., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Frank Hawkins Kenan, prominent businessman and philanthropist, died peacefully at his Durham home on June 4, 1996. Members of his family were at his bedside continually towards the end.

Mr. Kenan was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1912, son of Thomas S. and Annice Hawkins Kenan. The Kenan family originally settled in Wilmington, North Carolina For other places with the same name, see Wilmington (disambiguation).

Mr. Kenan was a Trustee of The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, The William R. Kenan, Jr. Funds, The Kenan Family Foundation, The Randleigh Foundation Trust and the Sarah Graham Kenan Foundation. For many years he was a trustee of The Duke Endowment, The Doris Duke Trust and the Nataline H. Duke Trust.

He received Honorary Degrees from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Hollins College, Elon College, Hampton-Sydney College, The University of the South and North Carolina State University History

He served as a County Commissioner of Durham County and on the Boards of the original Research Triangle Park Research Triangle Park, research, business, medical, and educational complex situated in central North Carolina. It has an area of 6,900 acres (2,795 hectares) and is 8 × 2 mi (13 × 3 km) in size. Named for the triangle formed by Duke Univ. , Durham County General Hospital and Durham Academy.

Mr. Kenan was a member of The Hope Valley Country Club, The Country Club of North Carolina (founding member), Treyburn Club, Breakers Golf and Tennis Club, Grandfather Mountain Country Club, Linville Country Club, Figure Eight Yacht Club, Landfall Club and Robert Trent Jones See: American TV writer Trent Jones

Robert Trent Jones, Sr. (June 20, 1906 – June 14, 2000) was a golf course architect who designed (or re-designed) about 500 golf courses in at least 40 US states and 35 other countries all around the world. International Golf Club in Virginia.

He was a founder of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Durham and supplied the funds to build the sanctuary. He was the first Senior Warden of that church.

His principal residence was Durham but he maintained homes at Landfall, Wilmington, NC, Grandfather Mountain and Figure Eight Island. He was a partner with the Weyerhaeuser Company of the 2,300 acre Landfall development.

Mr. Kenan is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Price Kenan of the home; two sons, Thomas S. Kenan, III and Owen Graham Kenan; two daughters, Elizabeth Kenan Howell and Annice Hawkins Kenan, all of Chapel Hill; four grandchildren; one stepson, Owen Gwyn of Chapel Hill and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will he held on Thursday, June 6 at 3:00 PM at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, Kimberly Drive, Durham. Burial will follow in the Memorial Garden at the Church. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall after the burial.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Duke University Medical Center, Plastic Surgery Research Fund, Department of Surgery, attention: Dr. Scott Levin, Box 3704, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC 27710.
