Son of William Newbold and Susannah Huffard.
When a small boy, James settled with his parents on a farm near Indianapolis, Ind., where he grew to manhood. They moved to Crawford Co, ILL. about the year 1858. He served during the Civil War in the 57th Reg. ILL. Volunteers, mostly with Sherman in his march through the southern states. He was discharged at Washington, D.C. in 1865.
