Darwin was wounded and captured at the battle of Shiloh on April 7, 1862, and was taken to the Federal Prison Hospital at Camp Dennison in Ohio where he died. He was originally interred at the Prison Camp Cemetery, Grave No. 7. He was later moved to Camp Chase.
