Aviation Cadet E. W. Burke, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #4913 in 1936. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

As Director of Flight Research for McDonnell Aircraft Co. of St. Louis, Burke was flight testing the new Navy jet, the XFD-1 PHANTOM, when it developed a flight problem and he was forced to jump (there was no ejection seat). He did not survive the jump.

Son of Alfred W. and Stella (Bierman) Burke.

Married the former Miss Olivia Josephine Bendelari in 1940.
