Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball as a pitcher for 11 seasons (1902 to 1912) with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and St. Louis Cardinals. He joined the Reds at the age of 29 after the team had seen him pitch brilliantly on the Ohio barnstorming circuit. After a 15 game rookie season with the Reds in 1902, he became an integral part of their pitching staff for the next 9 years, starting over 30 games 5 times, pitching in over 300 innings twice and winning over 14 games 4 times (topping with a 20-11 record in 1905). In 1907 he posted a 1.73 ERA, which was amazingly enough good for only 6th best that year. Along the way he was involved in a few Baseball anomalies. In his debut game on April 19, 1902 against the Chicago Cubs, he walked 7 batters in one inning (tying a record). On July 22, 1907 against the Phillies he won 10 to 3 in a game where not a single Red recorded an assist on any out. After the 1909 season he was dealt to the Phillies, where in 1910 he racked up a 16-13 record. However, he was injured for the next year, and pitched in only 4 games before the Phillies released him. In 1912 he joined the Cardinals, and pitched in a single game for them before retiring. His career totals were 124 Wins, 118 Losses, 291 Games Pitched, 19 Shutouts, 998 Strikeouts and a 2.49 Career Earned Run Average. After his career was over he became a businessman in his native Ohio, and served two terms as a County sheriff. His career 2.37 ERA still stands as a Cincinnati Reds team record. In 2001 he was posthumously inducted into the Reds' Team Hall of Fame. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
