Otey's farm was near Emanuel Bowen's (his brother-in-law) farm, and Otey's folks moved into a house that was half way between the farms so that the families could take turns helping care for their aging parents. Otey owned the only tractor (Fordson) in the area.
Robert Otey Bowen, Otey's nephew, lived with them for a few years and helped work on their farm. His brother, Martin also lived at the home for a couple of harvest seasons. Vena and Otey also had two children from an orphanage live with them for awhile, one girl, Melvina Haley, and a boy.
