Harriet was a daughter of Byrd and Lydia Billings. She was born in Nodaway County, Missouri on 4 February 1841 and died in Umatilla County, Oregon on 1 February 1901. She married William 'Will' Groom on 16 August 1860 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
Their nine children were:

Byrd Sherman Groom (20 October 1867 Lane County, OR-1937) buried Prowers County, Colorado;
Sarah Elizabeth Troxel (21 January 1869 Lane County, OR-18 April 1943) buried Springfield, Oregon;
Rachel Ann Groom (born and died 22 March 1874 Lane County, OR) probably buried in Lane County although family sources state she is buried at Pilot Rock Cemetery;
Maggie Matilda Groom (8 September 1875 Eugene, Lane County, OR-25 December 1877) buried Pilot Rock Cemetery;
Harriet Jane 'Hattie' Reeves (8 December 1877 Umatilla County, OR-6 October 1929) buried Clark County, Washington;
Charles Frederick 'Fred' Grooms (12 February 1883 Benton Co, OR-11 March 1954) cremated, ashes spread over the forest near the Dale, Oregon.
