George F. Cook is the son of Joel Cook and Elizabeth Swatman, both born in Canada. George married Mary B. Schoonover March 5, 1868. Mary was born April 3, 1844 in Niles, Berrian County, Michigan.

George died at his home in Dutch Creek Township, nine and a half miles west of West Chester, Iowa. He previously lived in Amelia, Holt County, Nebraska where he and other family members migrated to from Crawford County, Wisconsin.

Private George Cook served in Company M, 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted on 25 Jan 1864 and was discharged on 19 Jul 1865.
