Death of E. P. Merrill
Ezra P. Merrill, who has been in failing health for a year or more, but has continued to attend to his business til within a few weeks, passed away Tuesday morning after being confined to his bed but about a week. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure, but the primary cause was a general breaking up of the system, the result of a long, hard working, industrious life. He has not rusted, he has worn out. His age was sixty-six years and about eleven months.
Mr. Merrill was born in Parkman, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Merrill, prominent people of the town fifty years ago. When he arrived at manhood he married Christiana, daughter of the late Deacon Samuel and Rhoda Coburn of Parkman. The result of this marriage was several children, some of whom passed away in early childhood.
Mr. Merrill followed the occupation of farmer til about twenty years ago when he disposed of his farm and moved to this town where he has since resided. Mr. Merrill's services have been in continuous demand while living here as an expert in various branches of business, and he has always proved faithful to the trust imposed upon him and he will be much missed by those who have employed him and may need similar service in the future. He was one of our best citizens, honorable in all his dealings with his fellows, genial and companiable. Morally he was above reproach in every respect. A truly good man has gone to his reward. Much sympathy is manifested for the stricken wife, who is in feeble health and to whom he has been the kindest of husbands these many years. His immediate family is a wife and four children, Etta, Mrs. M. F. Fogg of this town, Carrie, Mrs. J. E. Brawn of Dover and Henry P. and Thomas who reside here. Two brothers survive him, True G. Merrill of Fort Fairfield, and Nathaniel of Sangerville.
