James Henry McLean
Birth: Aug. 13, 1829
Ayr
South Ayrshire, Scotland
Death: Aug. 12, 1886
Dansville
Livingston County
New York, USA

US Congressman. McLean was raised in Nova Scotia, and started to learn medicine with the physician employed by the mining company his father managed. At age 13 he accepted $200 from his father to relocate to the United States and continue his studies and career. After working as a drug store clerk in Philadelphia he moved to St. Louis, where he became active in several businesses, including patent medicine. After residing briefly in New Orleans, where his business acumen led to his taking charge of finances for the Narciso Lopez expedition that attempted to liberate Cuba from Spain, he returned to St. Louis, where he graduated from St. Louis Medical College and became wealthy and internationally famous as the creator and distributor of several patent medicines. In 1882 he was the successful Republican nominee for the US House in a special election, and he completed the term of the deceased Thomas Allen, December 1882 to March 1883. McLean also patented several inventions, including an early model of the machine gun, because as a devout Methodist he opposed violence and hoped that weapons capable of mass killing would be so terrible as to dissuade nations from warfare. (bio by: Bill McKern)
