Dr. John Buckman, 88, of Charlottesville, passed away at the Colonnades on Friday, August 20, 2010.
He was born on June 1, 1922, in Warsaw, Poland, the son of the late Ludwik and Kayla Buchman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bronek Buchman.
Dr. Buckman was a faculty member at the University of Virginia for 39 years. After earning his medical degree from King's College in London in 1950 he served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps for three years and then went on to work in various psychiatric facilities while pioneering the Marlborough Day Hospital in London. As a result of Dr. Buckman's groundbreaking research, he was invited in 1966 to join the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatry. Originally an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, he became Vice Chairman in 1979 and was honored with a Chaired Professorship in 1984. He was the director of psychiatric outpatient and inpatient services, director of psychiatric education, and director of residency training in psychiatry at the Medical Center.
In 1977, Dr. Buckman became the first western visiting professor of psychiatry at the Charite Hospital in East Berlin. In 1995, he was visiting professor at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Buckman was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, President of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia, served on the State Human Rights Committee of Virginia, chaired the University of Virginia Senate Faculty Relations Committee and Grievance Committee, and was affiliated with many other organizations.
Dr. Buckman was a fixture at the University of Virginia Medical Center, an institution he was extremely proud to be a part of, and shared his passion by speaking to various community outreach programs on topics such as substance abuse and holiday depression. His friends, colleagues, and family all considered him thoughtful, hard working, kind-hearted, and comedic. He was recognized for his extreme eyebrows and clever dancing.
Dr. Buckman is survived by his wife of 39 years, Erika; daughter, Caroline; son, Daniel; daughter, Simone; extended family in Belgium, England and Germany.
A memorial service was held Sunday, August 29, 2010, at the University of Virginia Chapel. The family received friends following the service at the Colonnade Club.
