Elizabeth I. "Liz" Jackson, 95, of Rock Island, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island where she was a member, or to your favorite charity.
Elizabeth I. Milner was born on April 17, 1915, in Sherrard, the fifth of six children born to Jonathan and Mary Robertson Milner. Her father was a coal miner in the area, and the family moved many times so he could find work.
In 1929, the Milners moved to Rock Island. Elizabeth started school at Rock Island Senior High School, and graduated in 1932.
Times were very tough in the early 1930s because of the Great Depression. Elizabeth had a difficult time finding a job, but in 1936 she did find full-time employment at the Royal Neighbors of America doing stenographic work. As times improved, she applied for work and was hired at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1940.
At the Arsenal, she met Russell Jackson. On Dec. 12, 1942, they were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island. Elizabeth continued to work at the Arsenal as Russell served his country in the Army during World War II. At the end of the war, they lived in Rock Island.
On Sept. 21, 1948, she gave birth to their son, James Jackson. After his birth, Elizabeth resigned from the Arsenal and became a full-time mother. In 1961 she returned to employment at the Arsenal and worked there for 12 more years, retiring in July of 1973 at the age of 58.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth enjoyed sewing, craftwork, fishing, and the Chicago Cubs. She sewed many things for her family and mended all kinds of garments. Her craftwork included making dolls and coasters for her friends and family.
For many years, Elizabeth was an avid fisherman. She, her husband, son, and brother fished locally and throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. Elizabeth began rooting for the Chicago Cubs before her marriage to Russell. In her younger years, she attended a number of games and then later watched them regularly on television.
Those left to honor her memory include her son, James Jackson, Rock Island; niece, Janet Fefe, Rockville, Md.; and cousin, John Robertson, Galesburg. Her husband, three sisters, two brothers, and her parents preceded Elizabeth in death.
