Bessie Lee Wood Ridenour, age 99 of Newport, formerly of the Medford community in Lake City passed away March 10 at the home of her daughter in Newport. She was born June 21, 1905 in Campbell County, in the Agee community, now covered by the waters of Norris Dam. She was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church. She was a member of the W.M.U. and the Medford F.C.E. She was a craft person, doing rug hooking, bottoming of chairs with corn shucks and making hats out of corn shucks. She made old fashioned bonnets, and did crocheting and quilting. She loved gardening and enjoyed canning and freezing the produce she raised. She sold craft items to a craft shop at the Museum of Appalachia, the Community Craft Center on Highway 61 and to craft stores in New York and Asheville, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, O.G. (Gip) Ridenour; daughter, Opal Houchin of Raleigh, NC; sons, George (2 _ years old) and William Ridenour; parents, William R. and Lucy May Irwin Wood; sisters, Margaret Davis, Mabel Bolinger, Dorothy Vowell and Ammone Miller; brothers, J.Will Wood and Sam Wood; son in law, Vernon Houchin.

She is survived by her daughter, Nona Agee and husband, William of Newport; daughter in law, Imo Jean Ridenour of Lake City; grandchildren, Ella Lee Ford and husband, Gary of Newport, Judy Smith and husband, Glenn of Atlanta, GA, Tommy Houchin and wife, Barbara of Nashville, Eddy Houchin and wife, Jane of Raleigh, NC, Terry Ridenour and wife, Sandy of Lake City, James Agee and wife, Terri of Morristwon; great grandchildren, Molly Ford, Lee, Greg, Joe, Charlie and Abby Houchin, Alex and Bradley Ridenour and Michele Cauthen; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were March 12 at the Lake City United Methodist Church with Rev. Brenda Poole officiating. Interment was in the Norris Memorial Gardens in Norris.

Hatmaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
