Son of John M.Patton and Margaret Williams Patton,youngest of nine children,eight sons and one daughter.

Soldier, civil engineer, professor of civil engineering at the Virginia Military institute from 1873 to 1882 and again from 1887 to 1889, from 1882 to 1887.
Educated at Virginia Military Institute,graduated in the class of 1869.He was in the battle of New Market.Entered V.M.I.in 1862;resumed his studies in 1867.Married Miss Annie G.Jordan in 1875 daughter of Samuel F.Jordan of Rockbridge County.
