Robert married Martha Ann Kirkpatrick on April 24th 1856. She was a daughter of Hugh and Louisa Kirkpatrick. Rev. R.L. Grier was licensed to preach the Gospel by the First Presbytery of the Carolina's in April of 1858 and under the order of that Synod; he labored in the Georgia, Memphis and First Presbyteries.

Rev. Grier was ordained and installed pastor of the A. R. P. Church of Troy, Obion Co., Tennessee on November 19th 1861. He left this charge during the year of 1869 and moved to Marshall Co., Mississippi and settled in the bounds of Mt. Carmel church; employing his time in teaching school and preaching to the congregation of Mt. Carmel and also that of Beulah A.R.P. in Shelby Co., Tennessee.

Here Rev. Grier was called to mourn the loss of his wife; who died June 27, 1871. Martha Grier was "a faithful companion, a woman of undoubted piety and highly esteemed by all who knew her." She was the mother of six children:
Dr. Isaac Oscar (1857-1881)
Louisa Isabella {m. J. W. Griffith} (1859-1938)
Hugh Kirkpatrick (1861-1881)

Rev. John Stewart (1868-1909)

On October 10th 1872, Rev. Grier married Miss Eleanor Jane Moffatt, daughter of Samuel and Eleanor Jane Moffatt, of Marshall Co., Mississippi. Rev.Grier left the Mt. Carmel branch of his charge in 1879, sold his possessions in Mississippi and moved to Shelby Co., Tennessee in 1880. About this time he experienced a severe attack of jaundice, gradually sank under weakness and departed this earthly life on February 16th 1881. His body was laid to its long rest and his spirit returned to God who gave it. His two oldest sons died the same year as their father. Of the survivors, Rev. John S. Grier, pastor of Sharon A.R.P. in South Carolina and Rev. A. H. Griffith of Little Rock, Ark., a grandson of Rev. Grier's.
