|Death: ||May 8, 1876|
Taken from the DARWIN CALIFORNIA book by Robert Palazzo.
Pg 24...On May 8, 1876 frank Kleiner, a partner in the Darwin Brewery, shot and killed a Mexican named Montenegro at the Darwin Brewery. Montenegro was described as "either idiotical or crazy or both". It seems that Darwin citizens had taken up collections of money on several different occasions in order to send him away, but each time he returned. On this May 8, Montenegro demanded money from Kleiner who was tending bar at the time. When the demand was refused, Montenegro "became wild, ran outside and began throwing stones in the house, at Kleiner and at the bar fixtures. Kleiner drew his pistol and fired at him, but missed his mark - when the assailant started to run, he fired again and deceased fell and soon died". Kleiner gave himself up, but was released from custody after an arraignment before Justice McManus.
To my understand there is no headstone.
Note: Shot May 1876 (before the 13th)
