Husband of Carrie Jane Hammond Brown.

He served as a Private with Company D, 15th Infantry during the war.

He was "Killed In Action" in the Battle for Rome, Italy and was awarded a Purple Heart.

At the families request, his state of birth was added to his headstone (Pennsylvania) instead of his state of residence (Delaware).

Private Raymond L. Brown, 27, husband of Mrs. Carrie Hammond Brown, 1210 West Fourth street, Wilmington, Del., and a son of Mrs. Eva Barr of Concordville, has been missing in Italy since June 1st. He was an infantryman in the Fifth Army, and had been overseas four months. Before going into service he had been a painter. His employer had secured a deferment for him, but he waived deferment and went into the army about a year ago.

The body of Pvt. Raymond L. Brown, formerly of Concordville, who was killed in action in Italy on June 1st, 1944, will arrive at the Hicks funeral home in West Chester on Friday, when a military funeral will be held on Saturday with interment at Grove Cemetery. Services will be conducted by Dr. Leon T. Moore.

Private Brown was a member of Company D, 15th infantry. He enlisted in August, 1943, and was sent overseas in March, 1944. The company was defending a small town in Italy, and was occupying a wooded range along the edge of the town. Suddenly the enemy opened fire with heavy artillery shells, and the young man was killed instantly by fragments of a shell which exploded near his position.

The body had been buried in the American Military Cemetery at Nettuno, Italy.

Besides his mother, Mrs. Elwood Barr, of Concordville, and his wife, now Mrs. Clarence Robinson, of Wilmington, Del. he is survived by a sister, Mrs. William Manley, of Concordville and three brothers, Leon Brown, of Kennett Square; Arthur and Audrey (sic) Brown, of Concordville.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral without further notice from the Hicks Funeral Home, 229 S. High St., West Chester, on Saturday, July 31, at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Grove Cemetery.
