Professional Football Team Owner. Born in Coultersville, Pennsylvania, he was dubbed as "The Chief" and was the founding owner of the National Football League Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1933, he paid a $2,500 franchise fee to start a NFL club based in the City of Pittsburgh and named his new team the Pirates. He renamed the team the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940 and thus started a team which became one the most dominant teams in the NFL, winning four Super Bowls in (1974-75, 1978, 1979). After the 1974 season, Rooney relinquished the day-to-day operation of the club to his son, he remained as Chairman of the Board of the club until his death at age 87 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
