Born in Coultersville, Pennsylvania, he was dubbed as "The Chief" and was the founding owner of the National Football League Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1933, he paid a $2,500 franchise fee to start a NFL club based in the City of Pittsburgh and named his new team the Pirates. He renamed the team the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940 and thus started a team which became one the most dominant teams in the NFL, winning four Super Bowls in (1974-75, 1978, 1979). After the 1974 season, Rooney relinquished the day-to-day operation of the club to his son, he remained as Chairman of the Board of the club until his death at age 87 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
