Death took the oldest businessman in Emerson when Walter H Clites, 83, died Jan. 24. Services were held Jan. 26 at the Emerson Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Person.
Mr. Clites had worked almost his entire life as a blacksmith, auto mechanic and welder. He was interested in the many changes which came to the nation during the span of his life and sold the first automobile in Emerson.
He was a member of the Emerson Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years and acted as chief for several years. He was appointed "honorary fireman" of the department in 1956. Friendly and a good neighbor, he will be long remembered in the community for his sincerity and devotion to family and friends.
He was born Nov. 23, 188O, in Mills county, the third of five children of Isaac and Sarah Clites. He spent his entire life in the Emerson vicinity.
He was united in marriage to Bertha Mae Anstine June 12, 1903, at Deward, Nebr. Three children were born to this union, two of whom died in Infancy.
Music for the services was furnished by Frederick Larson, with Mrs. Thelma Blank as organist Serving as pall bearers were Dala Wade, Floyd Turner, Wilbur Morrison, Raymond Mitchell, Homer Shoop, James Cheney, Elmer Westenberg and Horace Greenwood. Mrs. Raymond Mitchell, Mrs. Horace Greenwood, Mrs. Ray Huntsman and Mrs. Minnie Whisler cared for the flowers. Burial was in the Emerson cemetery, with Nelson Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Finder, Omaha; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Shapcott, Red Oak and Mrs. Edna Carlson, Palmer, Nebr.; two brothers, Warren of Red Oak and Willard of Hope, Kansas.
