Major League Baseball Executive. For twenty-one years (1955 to 1976), he served as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was a significant factor in the franchise's clinching of two World Championship titles (1960 and 1971). The son of entertainer Joe E. Brown, he began his lengthy association with baseball during the late 1930s, serving at various capacities in the Minor Leagues, before joining the Pirates' organization. In 1955 he succeeded Branch Rickey as Pirates' general manager, and brought in Danny Murtaugh to serve as manager during the 1957 season. In 1958, the team improved to an 84 win 70 loss record (from 62 wins 92 losses in 1957), and a second place finish behind the Milwaukee Braves in the National League, earning Brown The Sporting News Major League Executive of the Year Award. During Brown's tenure, the Pirates fielded such star players as Roberto Clemente, Dick Groat, Bill Mazeroski, Bill Virdon, Vern Law and Don Hoak (from the 1960 squad), and Willie Stargell, Al Oliver, Bob Moose and Manny Sanguillen (from the 1971 team). In addition, Brown was helpful in strengthening the Pirates' farm system which produced star players Dave Parker, John Candelaria and Omar Moreno, who were key elements on their 1979 World Champion team. Brown returned to serve as interim general manager of the Pirates in 1985. (bio by: C.S.)
