| Birth: | Nov. 12, 1929 Philadelphia Pennsylvania | | Death: | Sep. 14, 1982 | Actress, Princess of Monaco. Born Grace Patricia Kelly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John and Margaret Kelly, a wealthy construction manager, she was the third of four children. With natural beauty, she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and began a modeling career, quickly turning to movies. Her first major picture was "High Noon" (1952) with Gary Cooper, which caught Hollywood's attention. She played in "Dial M for Murder" (1954), Rear Window (1954), "The Country Girl" (1954), "To Catch a Thief" (1955), and "The Bridges of Toko-ri" (1956). At the Cannes Film Festival in 1955, she met Prince Rainier, ruler of Monaco, and within a year, they were engaged. On April 19, 1956, she married Prince Rainier in Monaco in the "Wedding of the Century," allowing MGM Studios to film the entire wedding in exchange for ending her seven-year movie contract. As Princess of Monaco, she remained in the public eye, always showing dignity and grace, further warming her with her adopted country and with the American public. She and Prince Rainier had three children: Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. On September 13, 1982, she and Princess Stephanie were involved in an accident when their car slipped off the winding roads of France near Monaco. When the car stopped rolling, Stephanie, while injured, was safe, but Grace died of her injuries the next day. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)
