Joseph was the son of George Ankeny and Susan Brailler.
He married on August 26, 1841, to Eleanor Welker.
They were living in Knox County, Ohio, in 1850, and in Rock Grove Township, Floyd County, Iowa, in 1880.

Died at Rock Grove Iowa Nov 27, aged 63 years and 9 days. Deceased was born in Westmoreland County, PA in 1819 and moved with his parents to Knox County when but a child. They located in Berlin township, where a village sprung up that still bears the family name. Joseph resided there for over thirty years and in 1859 removed to Floyd county Iowa and settled 2 and 1/2 miles east of Nora Springs and engaged in farming, which pursuit he followed until his health failed him. The Nora Springs Advertiser says of the deceased: He has ever been prominent in the development of the interests of Rock Grove township, and particularly that of public schools. He has given much attention to scientific agriculture. Mr Ankeny was honored and respected by his acquaintances as a man of the strictest integrity. He leaves a wife and 2 daughters and a whole township to mourn his loss.
