| Birth: | Nov. 9, 1922 Denton Caroline County Maryland, USA | | Death: | Aug. 14, 2010 Milford Kent County Delaware, USA | Governor of Delaware. A Democrat, he served as Delaware's 72nd Governor from January 16, 1973 to January 18, 1977. The Maryland-born Tribbitt saw action with the US Navy during World War II and afterwards settled in Odessa, Delaware, where he worked as a merchant. His first important political office was as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives (1957 to 1964), during which he was Speaker for all but one session. He was elected as Delaware's 17th Lieutenant Governor under Governor Charles L. Terry, Jr., serving from 1965 to 1969, then returned to the State House of Representatives from 1971 to 1972. Tribbitt's administration as Governor was plagued by the state's troubled financial situation, including the near collapse of its official bank, Farmer's Bank, and he was defeated for reelection in 1976. After losing another bid for the Governorship in 1984 he returned to the private sector, though he did serve as a Presidential Elector in 1992. (bio by: Russ Pickett)
