He had been deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Lt Sanderson died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham of wounds sustained July 13 in an explosion while he was on patrol near Char Coucha in Nahr-e Saraj south district, Helmand province. He was treated on the ground before being flown to the UK for further treatment.
Aged 29, he was born in Oklahoma and his family live in Windlesham, Surrey. Lt Sanderson was educated at Bradfield College and Exeter University where he read history and was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. After university, he joined the Royal Marines in 2002 but withdrew from training after breaking his ankle. He worked in the financial sector for a brief time and then attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, commissioning into the Mercian Regiment in April 2009. Having passed the Platoon Commanders' Battle Course, he assumed command of 1 Platoon, A Company and deployed to Kenya to take part in Exercise Grand Prix. His platoon then joined the re-formed B (Malta) Company for deployment to Afghanistan as part of 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battlegroup. Described by a senior officer as "a star of the future", he was liked and respected in the Battalion from top to bottom for his outstanding ability, leadership and humour.
Lt Sanderson leaves behind his mother, father and sister, along with other relatives and many friends.
His family paid the following tribute: "We have lost a brilliant and loving son and brother. John loved his Army career and was enthusiastically committed to his men and particularly his and their role in Afghanistan. He believed he was contributing to a better life for the Afghan people. We will miss him tremendously but we will never forget him and what he gave to us."
Funeral with full military honours was held on August 31, 2010 at Church of St John the Baptist, Church Road, Windlesham, Surrey.
